What To Look For Before You Sign A Media Contract

A media proposal can look simple on the first page and become expensive in the details. Before signing, compare the complete commitment—not only the advertised monthly rate.

Confirm The Full Financial Commitment

Calculate the total across the full term and identify every cost outside the media rate.

  • Production, setup and creative changes
  • Minimum media commitments
  • Taxes, platform fees and pass-through costs
  • Automatic increases or renewal pricing

Understand The Exit

Look for auto-renewal, cancellation windows, notice requirements and early termination charges. A reasonable exit clause matters when the business changes or the channel does not perform as expected.

Define Delivery And Make-Goods

The agreement should state what is being delivered, where, how often and what happens when inventory is missed. Vague promises make accountability difficult.

  • Placement and geography
  • Estimated or guaranteed delivery
  • Reporting frequency
  • Credits or replacement inventory

Keep Access To Your Assets And Data

Confirm ownership and access for advertising accounts, creative files, landing pages, tracking and historical reports. A supplier relationship should not leave the business unable to move or review its own work.

The best time to negotiate clarity is before the contract begins—not after the first reporting problem.
